Alexandria, Va., USA - The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental Research (AADR) announce the IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research Cover of the Year, 2018 for the paper "Schwann Cell Phenotype Changes in Aging Human Dental Pulp" (J Dent Res 97: 347-355). The award was presented during the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American AADR and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.
The authors of this article are Eduardo Couve, Marco Lovera, Kiyoko Suzuki and Oliver Schmachtenberg from the University of Valparaíso, Chile. Schwann cells are glial cells that support axonal development, maintenance, defense and regeneration in the peripheral nervous system but there is limited knowledge regarding the organization, plasticity and aging of Schwann cells within the dental pulp in adult permanent teeth. This study sought to relate changes in the pattern of Schwann cell phenotypes between young and old adult teeth with neuronal, immune and vascular components of the dental pulp.
The JDR Cover of the Year Award, 2018 image shows the characterization of the Schwann cell glial network in the dental pulp from a young human adult permanent tooth, with S100 (red) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP; green) immuofluorescent markers. Double immunolabeling (S100/GFAP) from a coronal section shows GFAP-expressing radially arranged Schwann cell processes projecting from the Raschkow plexus into the odontoblast layer.
The award, voted on by the IADR/AADR Publications Committee, honors the cover that features an aesthetically pleasing, scientifically novel image that enhances the impact of the article. All 13 JDR covers from 2018 were reviewed.
