Alexandria, Va., USA - The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Jaime Cury, University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Piracicaba, Brazil, as the 2019 recipient of William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award. Cury was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.
Cury is Professor and Chair of Biochemistry and Cariology in the UNICAMP Dental School at Piracicaba, Brazil where he has been faculty since 1974. Cury graduated from the UNICAMP Dental School before obtaining a MA from the Federal University of Parana, Curitiba, Brazil and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Cury has published over 26 book chapters and 326 peer-reviewed publications just on various aspects of cariology research, in particular fluoride mechanisms on caries. He is one of the most recognized names for over 30 years on the effects of fluoride in oral health.
In 2017 the IADR Research in Dental Caries Award was renamed the William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award, who had recently passed. Bowen was professor emeritus, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Center for Oral Biology, University of Rochester Medical Center School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York, USA. He was a long-standing member of IADR and served as the 67th president of the Association, the 10th president of the American Association for Dental Research and as IADR treasurer.
