Peter Lockhart received 2019 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology

Alexandria, Va., USA - The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Peter Lockhart, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, as the 2019 recipient of IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research. Lockhart was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.

Lockhart is currently the Chairman of the Department of Oral Medicine and the Director of the Oral Medicine Institute at the Carolinas Medical Center. Throughout his career, he received a World Health Organization Fellowship in Oral Medicine in the United Kingdom and a TC White Visiting Professorship at University of Glasgow, Scotland. Lockhart holds Fellowship in Dental Surgery diplomas from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Lockhart's research focuses on oral medicine, particularly the dental management of medically complex patients. He has had funding for bacteremia research for over 25 years, most recently a five-year National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research R01 grant study concerning associations between oral disease and infective endocarditis. He has over 130 textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles on topics such as oral cancer and side effects, xerostomia, treatments for oral disorders as well as oral aspects of medical conditions and infective endocarditis and its prevention when linked to dental treatments and the use of antimicrobial compounds and their possible side effects.

Supported by 3M Oral Care, the Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award is made for outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy or safety of drugs used in dentistry and consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
