Alexandria, Va., USA - The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Stephen Birch, University of Queensland, Australia as the 2019 recipient of Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Award. Birch was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 97th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). The IADR/AADR/CADR General Session & Exhibition is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22, 2019.
Birch received his M.A. in Fiscal Studies at the University of Bath, England and his D.Phil. in Economics from the University of York, England. For 30 years he worked at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where he established his global reputation for his academic work on health economics.
Birch has published over 270 publications in a diverse range of high-quality, international journals and has actively collaborated with dental researchers and policy makers in many countries including the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Norway and Sweden. His research focuses on a wide range of themes including measurement of oral health, impact of patient charges on service utilization, evaluation of public health measures including water fluoridation, technology assessment and provider payment/incentives. Birch's research has made a significant global contribution to dental research and oral health policy development.
The Behavioral, Epidemiological and Health Services Research Award is supported by DentaQuest Partnership for Oral Health Advancement and is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding achievements in the areas of behavioral science and health services research as they relate to dentistry. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque and is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
