A study of 43 infants who underwent up to 7 MRI scans during the first 2 years of life finds that cortical thickness in the brain increases rapidly until a maximum thickness at around 14 months of age, and that each developmentally distinct region of thickness was functionally important, with different regions peaking at different ages and some regions continuing to thicken beyond 2 years of age, according to the authors.
