VIENNA, Austria--A trio of plenary speakers, including Nobel Laureate Gérard Mourou, will describe fast-moving advances in laser science and technology at the 2019 OSA Laser Congress and Exhibition, 29 September to 3 October in Vienna, Austria.
The Congress will give attendees a comprehensive view of the latest advances in solid-state laser technology as well as the applications of lasers for industrial products and markets.
Klaus Loeffler, a managing director at Trumpf Laser, will review the success of many industrial laser applications but also call out hype that can have negative impacts for laser manufacturers. His talk will consider how the latest in laser-technology applications might change the outlook for the laser industry.
Nobel Laureate Gérard Mourou, professor at the École Polytechnique in France, as well as emeritus professor at the University of Michigan, U.S.A., will give a presentation entitled "Passion for Extreme Light." He is co-creator of the laser amplification technique known as chirped pulse amplification for which he shares the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics with University of Waterloo, Canada, Associate Professor of Physics Donna Strickland. CPA revolutionized the field of optics, opening new branches like attosecond pulse generation, nonlinear QED and compact particle accelerators.
Clara Saraceno, associate professor of photonics and ultrafast laser science at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, will review progress in ultrafast disk laser systems, next steps and challenges towards further scaling. She will discuss ongoing and new applications, in areas such as biomedical devices and industrial manufacturing, opened up by the unique performance of ultrafast thin-disk lasers.
