Magnetographic imaging of muscle activity

Peer-Reviewed Publication

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Researchers report a noninvasive method for spatial and temporal imaging of muscle activity by measuring the spatial distribution of magnetic fields produced by physiological electric currents; the authors describe imaging of individual phases of the cardiac cycle, as well as activity associated with lower back pain, for which no direct assessment method currently exists, suggesting that the method could have diverse applications in research and medicine.
