Ali Vural Ak Center receives funding for Islamic studies podcast

Grant and Award Announcement

George Mason University

Peter Mandaville, Professor, Schar School of Policy and Government, and Interim Director of the Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies (CHSS), received $50,000 from the Henry R. Luce Foundation to help establish the first podcast dedicated to academic Islamic Studies. The podcast will be associated with the center's existing digital scholarship platform, The Maydan, which has established itself as a leading forum for online publishing in the multidisciplinary field of Islamic Studies.

The Maydan podcast will offer discussions addressing a range of topics and themes--both contemporary and historical--across multiple academic disciplines. It will be designed to appeal to both academic and non-expert audiences.

A team of scholars from different institutions and representing a wide range of subfields and domains of expertise will contribute to the podcast.

Mandaville expects that The Maydan podcast will serve as a resource hub that will engage and leverage diverse scholarly networks, academic interests, and affiliations. The podcast will be overseen by The Maydan's editor-in-chief, Ahmet Tekelioglu, a Research Fellow at the Ali Vural Ak Center.

Funding for this project began in July 2020 and will end in late June 2021.
