The 1st International BioDesign Research Conference was held online in December 2020, hosted by Stanford University, University of Warwick, and BioDesign Research. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 1st International BioDesign Research Conference was held virtually. Approximately 7,500 people from 86 countries attended the live and satellite presentations.
The conference focused on the general aspect of biosystems design and its subfields, including de novo design, microbial biological design, animal and human biological design, plant biological design, and more. Sixty-four world-renowned experts and scholars, including 6 Nobel Prize winners and 16 multinational academicians, were invited to present at the conference, and 35 scholars shared their latest research via satellite video presentations. Additionally, 126 abstracts and 106 posters were also presented.
Twelve posters were selected by the conference's expert committee to receive poster awards. Dr. Gita Naseri of Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany) and Dr. Zhu Cheng from Tianjin University (China) won first prize. Over 300 participants from around the world have posted their photos in the conference cloud group photo album.
One of the main innovations of this conference is the incorporation of unique Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for each poster and presentation, making these items citable and permanent record to protect their intellectual property. The conference not only showcased the up-to-date research progress in the field of biosystem designs and synthetic biology, but also promoted the exchange and interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration among scientists across the world. This conference also greatly increased public visibility of BioDesign Research and enhanced the confidence and trust of the scientific community in this new journal. The conference attracted more than 30 renowned scholars to join the editorial board and advisory board of BioDesign Research. BioDesign Research is part of the Science Partner Journal program within the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
