NIH Office of Research on Women's Health to Hold Virtual Meeting Series on Advances in Women's Health, Sex and Gender in Health and Disease, and the Advancement of Women in Biomedical Careers

WHAT: The NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) will hold the ORWH 30th Anniversary Virtual Meeting Series: Advancing the Health of Women Through Science. The series consists of three events:

  • The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Annual Meeting
  • The ORWH 30th Anniversary Scientific Symposium
  • The Specialized Centers of Research Excellence on Sex Differences (SCORE) Annual Meeting Keynote Address

The meetings will take place December 14, 15, and 16, 2020. Audience members can attend the livestreamed events virtually or watch the recorded videocasts when they are made available after the meetings. The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Annual Meeting will focus on mentoring young investigators, allow BIRCWH (pronounced "birch") Scholars to present their research findings, and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program.

WHO: Highlights of this year's program include the following:

  • Patricia E. Molina, M.D., Ph.D., the Richard Ashman Professor in Physiology at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, will give the 4th Ruth L. Kirschstein Memorial Lectureship (10:15 a.m.-11:00 a.m.).
  • The 2020 Annual BIRCWH Meeting will also include a plenary session featuring presentations on research findings by leading BIRCWH Scholars (11:00 a.m.-12:05 p.m.). Topics include sex differences in cardiovascular health among U.S. adults, oxytocin administration in low-risk labor and birth, and neurobiological links to the experience of pain from stimuli that are not normally painful and anxiety-related behaviors.
  • Claire Sterk, Ph.D., President Emerita and Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public Health at Emory University, will give a Legacy of Leadership lecture in honor of BIRCWH's 20th anniversary (12:15 p.m.-1:00 p.m.).
  • The virtual BIRCWH poster session and informal virtual networking session will follow (1:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.).

The ORWH 30th Anniversary Scientific Symposium, "Advancing the Health of Women Through Science," will be a full-day symposium to mark the 30th anniversary of ORWH. The symposium will cover a wide range of topics, including women's mental health, environmental factors affecting women's health, pain management for women, and sex as a biological variable.

WHO: Highlights of this year's program include the following:

  • Janine Austin Clayton, M.D., Director of ORWH, will welcome participants and provide opening remarks (9:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m.).
  • NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., will mark the 30th anniversary of ORWH with remarks on advances in women's health research (10:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m.).
  • Pauline M Maki, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director of the Women's Mental Health Research Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will give the morning keynote address, titled "Women's Mental Health Across the Life Course" (10:15 a.m.-10:45 a.m.).
  • A panel discussion on sex as a biological variable (SABV) will be followed by a Q&A session (1:20 p.m.-2:35 p.m.).
  • A panel of leaders from across NIH will give their perspectives on women's health research (2:35 p.m.-4:05 p.m.).
  • Mary Woolley, M.A., President of Research!America, will give the afternoon keynote address, titled "Meeting the Moment" (4:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.).

The Specialized Centers of Research Excellence on Sex Differences (SCORE) Annual Meeting Keynote Address will highlight the importance of reporting sex-based findings in research articles. This talk will be beneficial to researchers, writers, editors, and general readers of biomedical science.
