    Beth Baker is Senior Media Relations Manager at open access publisher PLOS. She heads a small media team which promotes papers across all scientific fields published in PLOS’ seven journals, primarily through press releases."


    Beth works with key media centers, organizational partners and other press officers as well as with journalists. She also runs an informal discussion group for press officers at publishers. Since PLOS partnered with bioRxiv in 2018 to promote preprints, she has engaged in many discussions around handling of media for papers posted as preprints. Beth has worked at PLOS since 2013 and holds a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK.

    Karl Leif Bates edits, produces and writes research news from all units of Duke University in the Office of University Communications. His work includes media relations, online news, and science communication training for STEM faculty and trainees."


    He has written about science and medicine for 30 years – long enough to see some new hypotheses become accepted dogma. Karl has won the AAAS Science Journalism Award for his newspaper writing and four CASE Circle of Excellence gold awards for editing and writing. He holds a master’s in journalism from Northwestern University and a Political Science BA from Kalamazoo College and serves on advisory boards for the EurekAlert! news service and the Science Communicators of North Carolina (SCONC).

As a freelance consultant, she wrote feature stories, website content, fundraising appeals and promotional materials. She has an English degree from George Mason University and has worked at Cornell since 2009.

    Meagan is the Executive Director of the Science Press Package at AAAS/Science, where she oversees efforts to boost the visibility of forthcoming studies from the six Science family journals to 6,000+ reporters worldwide. "


    Prior to joining AAAS in 2013, she served as a senior writer at AIR Worldwide, where she interacted with scientists and engineers to communicate advances in wind engineering, seismology, climate science, and other fields. Previously, she was a science writer at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Meagan holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Spanish from Gettysburg College, and a Master's degree in Science Writing from The Johns Hopkins University. In 2008, Meagan received a Fulbright Scholarship to work with Dr. Juan Antonio Raga at the University of Valencia to help determine and communicate the cause of morbillivirus resurgence among small cetaceans in the Mediterranean.

    She joined EurekAlert!/AAAS as a Publications Assistant in 2007 shortly after graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication and Journalism from Towson University, and over the years progressed through the ranks to her current role. Prior to AAAS, Jennifer worked as an online news features producer for BaltimoreSun.com. She earned her Master's degree in Communication from The Johns Hopkins University in 2012.
