(IMAGE) Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia Caption The golden crowned sifaka, Propithecus tattersalli, is a lemur living in small social units in the north of Madagascar. Its distribution is very limited geographically, and it is considered as a critically endangered species by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). It still harbors high levels of genetic diversity as a result of a complex demographic history. The role played by its social structure still needs to be investigated. This picture shows two members of a social group. There are nine recognized species of sifakas in Madagascar, and all have similar social structure with only two reproducing adults and between two and four members.
