Dr. Heidi Culen, Climate Central (IMAGE) Climate Central Caption This is Climate Central's senior research scientist, Dr. Heidi Cullen, visiting the North Greenland Eemian ice drilling project where scientists from 14 nations recently completed the first season of drilling. The ultimate goal: obtain and analyze ice samples from the last time Earth was significantly warmer than present -- the Eemian era of roughly 120,000 to 130,000 years ago. Some climate models predict that by 2100, Earth’s average temperatures could again match those of the Eemian period (5-9° Fahrenheit warmer, on average, than present).
