MIDI-STEM Animation (IMAGE) DOE/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Caption This image shows an interference pattern (bottom right) introduced by a ringed object called a phase plate (top right) as electrons travel through a sample. The red represents an electron beam and the blue wave at center represents the changing phase of electrons passing through a sample as a wavelike motion. At right is a Berkeley Lab-developed technique called MIDI-STEM and at left is a conventional technique, STEM, that does not use a phase plate.
