Supernovae 1987A (IMAGE) University College London Caption The region around supernova remnant SN1987a, as seen by the Herschel Space Observatory. The remnant itself is the point of light in the centre of the circle, and is surrounded by large interstellar clouds of dust, most of which is very cold. Inset: an close-up of the remnant itself as seen in visible light by the Hubble Space Telescope. The glowing ring of material around the remnant is clearly seen.
