Artificial Bat Device (IMAGE) eLife Caption Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Antwerp created an 'artificial bat,' complete with ultrasonic microphones and an ultrasonic speaker acting as ears and a mouth, to gather echoes from different locations and assess the templates from the data. They found that the echoes returning from each place were unique enough for them to be used to recognize the location.
