Organized by the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), with the support of the International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3), this hybrid event will bring together scientists, policymakers, and international stakeholders to explore how scientific ocean drilling underpins vital research in areas such as climate change, geohazards, the deep biosphere, tectonic processes, and sustainable resource management.
“Scientific ocean drilling provides the fundamental tools for understanding Earth’s systems”, says Angelo Camerlenghi, researcher at OGS, Trieste (Italy) and Chair of the ESSAC, ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee. “It is essential for the implementation of informed policies and global scientific cooperation in addressing environmental and societal challenges”.
“In 2025, a significant organizational change will occur in scientific ocean drilling”, says Gilbert Camoin, Researcher at CEREGE, Aix-en-Provence (France), and Director of the EMA, ECORD Managing Agency. “The European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) have established the new International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3) with the Australian & New Zealand International Scientific Drilling Consortium (ANZIC) as Associate Member. Meanwhile, the United States and the People’s Republic of China are organizing their respective national scientific ocean drilling programs that should start in 2026”, says Camoin.
This high-level event, endorsed by UNESCO Ocean Decade, will feature keynote presentations and national statements from international scientific leaders and governmental representatives. It will serve as a platform to advocate for continued investment in scientific ocean drilling and deep-sea exploration, which are crucial for future marine policy and innovation. A Declaration of Commitment to Scientific Ocean Drilling will be presented as a key outcome of this event.

(13 European countries and Canada) for scientific ocean drilling as part of the International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3). The International Ocean Drilling Programme is an international marine research collaboration that explores Earth’s history and dynamics using ocean-going research platforms to recover data recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks, and to monitor subseafloor environments. IODP3 depends on facilities funded by two platform providers with financial contributions from additional partner agencies. Together, these entities represent 16 nations whose scientists are selected to staff IODP3 research expeditions.
