分裂期の延長に伴い、PLK1は、がん抑制因子p53を安定化し活性化するストップウォッチ複合体の形成を誘発する。この複合体は1回または数回にわたる長期化した分裂期間中に蓄積され、最終的に細胞周期の停止または細胞死を引き起こす。
