It’s hard to picture just how small some of the world’s smallest vertebrates are, but comparing them to standard household objects sometimes helps. Here, a BIC pen dwarfs many of the smallest frogs, fishes, salamanders, lizards, birds, and mammals. Each of these animals has, in essence, all of the same senses and organs of their much larger relatives and ancestors, squeezed into a tiny package. Illustrations: Mark D. Scherz
