PolyU research reveals sharp depletion in soil moisture, driving land water to flow into the oceans and contributing to a rise in sea levels

GMSL variations due to ERA5-Land SM change (black) and GRACE-derived SM change (blue) and from 30-day means of altimetry datasets from AVISO, NOAA, and CU (gray). The January 1993 to December 1999 trend was removed from the altimetry time series. Annual components were removed from the three curves. Vertical offsets were added to the blue and black curves to facilitate comparison with the gray line.
