Fringing coral reefs in southern China previously provided valuable economic benefits to the communities, including fisheries, gleaning for seaweeds and invertebrates, and vital protection against storm waves and flooding. However, impacts from over-fishing, dredging and construction, pollution and climate change have damaged the ecosystems, and the economic benefits they bring.
