In the summer of 2025, an international research team processes over 2,800 metres of ice in the Alfred Wegener Institute's ice laboratory. It comes from the oldest continuous ice core ever drilled on Earth: The Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice (BEOI) core. Drilled in the Antarctic between 2019 and 2025, the core contains valuable climate data from more than 1.2 million years ago. Gas inclusions allow the direct measurement of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane.
