Structure of an RNA thermometer (IMAGE)
Caption
Example of an RNA thermometer in the gene lpxP, identified in E. coli and conserved across various bacterial species. On the left, the OFF conformation. The Ribosome Binding Site (RBS, green) is “locked” into a stem-loop structure, hence preventing binding of the ribosome and translation of the downstream gene. On the right, the ON conformation, in which the RBS is accessible for translation.
