(Left) Deformation experiment on biotite and the corresponding stress-strain curve. The results show a gradual increase in strength after the formation of kinks. (Upper right) Microstructure of the biotite sample after deformation. (Lower right) Geometrical features of the formed kink bands. The tilt angles are symmetric with respect to the kink planes. These symmetric tilt angles satisfy the rank-1 connection, which is a necessary and sufficient geometric condition that allows continuity of deformation without material failure.
