A depiction of St Peter's Church and the Theatre Royal on Peter Street, Manchester, around 1855. At this time, Manchester's streets were rarely occupied by rich and poor at the same time. The cultural and recreational habits of the city’s different classes reinforced their segregation. Manchester’s middle classes were increasingly drawn to church while the city’s 600 pubs had a far greater pull on the working classes.
