Nocturnal rats are active at night and accumulate fatigue toward dawn. Using optogenetic stimulation of cortical neurons and simultaneous local field potential (LFP) recordings, the study revealed that neural responses were weaker before sunrise and stronger before sunset, indicating a roughly 24-hour rhythm in cortical activity.
