Possible endings of exogenous mitochondria after they enter the cell (IMAGE)
Caption
Yellow mitochondria are exogenous mitochondria, and blue ones are recipient cell mitochondria.
① Endosomes bind to lysosomes, and mitochondria are degraded;
② Endosomes are in direct contact with the endogenous mitochondrial network and deliver mtDNA to endogenous mitochondria;
③ Endosomes rupture and exogenous mitochondria escape and fuse with endogenous mitochondria;
④ Endosomes rupture and exogenous mitochondria escape and do not integrate with the endogenous mitochondrial network.
