Despite lacking mechanisms for absorbing water and nutrients like roots and vascular tissue of other land plants, the common liverwort Marchantia polymorpha absorbs and transfer nutrients using its rhizoids — hair-like structures previously thought to only be used to anchor the plant to its surroundings.
