Pristine coastlines are also marked by their extensive shallow-water coral reefs, such as those in Urunao, Guam. Military and urban projects can physically destroy reefs through dredging and sediment runoff. Expanding coastlines, digging channels, and loosened soil from construction can destroy or smother nearby corals. ©2026 Colin Anthony CC-BY-ND
