Figure | A passive optical nonlinearity that enables neuron-like activation. (a) Device images and measurement configuration. (b) The waveguide is engineered to efficiently convert light at telecom wavelengths. (c) As the input power increases, the signal shows a clear nonlinear response, closely resembling the sigmoid activation used in neural networks. (d) The second harmonic conversion efficiency approaches 80% in continuous-wave condition. (e) Modeling indicates that the nonlinear process can support extremely high operating speeds. (f) Experiments with femtosecond optical pulses confirm the same activation behavior at lower energy.
