Our data provide molecular evidence that microbes actively modulate their realized niches in response to community composition, reducing functional overlap as a potential mechanism for niche partitioning (microbial decision-making), while enhancing community productivity. Altogether, these findings demonstrate a selective advantage for proteome-level plasticity and point to generalizable molecular mechanisms that support microbial coexistence.
