To disentangle the effects of biotic (columns) and abiotic (rows) factors, we analysed protein expression profiles and growth of individual isolates, their pairwise combinations, and two distinct 4-member communities. These were cultivated in two contrasting carbon source environments, plant fibre and fructose media, representing abiotic variation. This design enabled a systematic assessment of how community composition (biotic) and nutrient environment (abiotic) influence microbial proteomes and overall community productivity, as measured by species-specific cell counts and protein expression (bottom).
