Scientists Hope to Understand What Makes Queen Bumblebees So Smart (IMAGE)
Caption
Felicity Muth (right), assistant professor of neurobiology, physiology and behavior at UC Davis and postdoctoral researcher Melanie Kimball collecting wild bumblebees in the Sierra Nevada. Queen bumblebees that survive winter have to start colonies from scratch every year, foraging alone until they can raise enough worker bees to sustain the colony. Muth and Kimball's research shows that bumblebee queens are better at learning the scents of flowers than workers.
