The evolution of spin order in zinc ferrite (IMAGE)
Caption
The co-evolution of order and spin-glass in zinc ferrite as iron (Fe) concentration drops through crystal doping with gallium (Ga), benchmarked through magnetic susceptibility (Tx) and heat capacity (Tc). At its purest, the crystals exhibit antiferromagnetic (long-range) order (cyan region), which drops sharply until short-range order takes over. Surprisingly, spin glass behavior (grey region) emerges during the initial dip in short-range order, suggesting that neither short- nor long-range order results in spin glass.
