Sepsis burden in China remains high despite declining mortality rates

A nationwide analysis based on Global Burden of Disease 2021 data found that China experienced an estimated 6.77 million sepsis cases and 2.48 million sepsis-related deaths in 2021. Although age-standardized incidence and mortality declined substantially since 1990, the absolute burden remained high, particularly among older adults and males. Infection-attributed sepsis remained the leading contributor to mortality, while chronic diseases increasingly shaped sepsis risk over time.
