Centromeric regions of the acrocentric chromosomes (chromosomes whose centromere lies near one end) in the complete medaka genome (Southern Japanese strain) (IMAGE)
Caption
Tandem repeat units are colored by SF (suprachromosomal family) type. Within large SF2 arrays (blue), small islands of SF1 (red) and SF3 (purple) are scattered. The black plot below each chromosome shows that the DNA methylation level is reduced only in the SF1 and SF3 islands, suggesting functional significance. These islands are also found in the Northern Japanese and Korean strains. Mb stands for one million base pairs.
