このインフォグラフィックは、シマハギが外洋（遠洋）生活からサンゴ礁での生活へ移行する際の典型的な変態過程を示したものである。成長に伴い体サイズが大きくなり、体の模様や色素沈着も変化する。D0は沿岸域への定着直後を示し、D1～D8は定着後の日数を表す。甲状腺ホルモン量は、沿岸環境への移行に先立ち、外洋生活の終わりにピークに達する。
