Parasites (IMAGE)
Caption
The tiny white dots surrounding the common periwinkles are parasite larvae released by the snails. Periwinkles serve as hosts for several parasites that can later infect blue mussels. Surprisingly, the experiments showed that even chemical cues from the snails could cause blue mussels to substantially reduce their filtration.
