Transformation of carbon dioxide (IMAGE)
Caption
Turning CO2 into a new molecule isn't instant. It has to climb an "energy hill" first. It starts by landing loosely on the material's surface, then has to fight its way toward a hydrogen atom sitting nearby. The hardest moment is right at the top of the hill, where CO2 bends and locks onto that hydrogen. Once it's over the hump, the two join together to form COOH, a key stepping-stone toward useful carbon products.
