Future research at Sandia National Laboratories will involve generating cold atoms at the thinnest part of their newly designed membrane-waveguide and guiding them along the waveguide, shown in this rendering. For a guided atom interferometer, three rapid laser pulses delivered through the waveguide will split, redirect and recombine the guided atoms.
