Illustration 2: analysis of the factors having impacted the course of the massive 2024-2025 chikungunya virus epidemic on Réunion island. (IMAGE)

The illustration displays four graphics: (A) the cumulative sampling map of the >3,000 viral genomes sequenced to analyse the epidemic; as well as the evolution during the epidemic of (B) the number of confirmed cases in relation to the evolution of climatic variables, (C) the viral population size, and (D) the effective reproduction number (the average number of new infections caused by one infected person at a specific point in time). The analyses show that the epidemic's dynamics were associated with climatic conditions (temperature and precipitation), and that the gradual build-up of population immunity was in theory sufficient to push the effective reproduction number below one, bringing the outbreak to an end.
