"A really excellent system" for studying meiotic biology (VIDEO)
Caption
Stowers Institute Investigator and Graduate School President Matt Gibson, Ph.D., describes new findings published in Science Advances showing that the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis uses many of the same proteins humans rely on to make eggs and sperm. Although the proteins and the synaptonemal complex they form resemble those in vertebrates, their functions differ, and Nematostella’s eight gonads, transparent color, and abundant gametes make it a promising system for studying meiosis in live samples.
