Microscope images show developing sucker buds at different stages. Early sucker buds have a clear separation between the outer layer of cells and the cells inside. As the sucker develops, the outer layer bends inward, creating a pocket. These changes in cell shape and position may ultimately give the sucker its shape. ©2026 Kimbara et al. CC-BY-ND
