Environmental nucleic acids (eNA) observations integrate temporal and ecological information across multiple dimensions of an ecological state. Repeated and complementary observations extend biomonitoring from state assessment toward reconstruction of ecological trajectories, including their direction, rate, pathways, progression, recovery, and underlying processes. This trajectory-oriented perspective can further support adaptive environmental management by informing when intervention is needed, whether management actions are effective, and how ecological systems respond over time.
