Forward and backward movement produce expanding and contracting optic flow, illustrated by the street scenes. At a simulated speed of 1.5 m/s, participants distinguished smaller speed differences for contraction. The middle graph shows performance of each participant (red and blue dots); lower values indicate higher sensitivity. Lines connect measurements from the same participant; the asterisk marks a statistically significant difference. The middle panel was modified from a figure in Luo et al. (2026) Journal of Vision.
