Visualizing hidden airflow near a heated wall (IMAGE)
Caption
The research team reconstructed three-dimensional regions of changing air density near a heated vertical wall. Upstream, smooth, sheet-like patterns extend across the wall; farther downstream, these structures become tilted, fragmented and elongated as the boundary layer develops toward turbulence.
