New informatic tools help ecologists compare the worldwide distribution of ants over time. The 20 million years old ant preserved in amber on the left is a species of turtle ant from the genus Cephalotes which was found in the Dominican Republic. The living ant on the right is a related species, Cephalotes cf. laminatus, from Venezuela. Pictures by Benoit Guénard.
