The star light is not simply reflected from a gas planet as from a mirror. The planet's atmosphere is a place where many phenomena related to radiation transfer take places. The Chandrasekhar function, describing the interaction of light with planetary atmospheres, has also been used in surface sensitive spectroscopic methods.
