Graphs showing juvenile growth and smoltification frequency for red-spotted masu salmon in hatcheries and natural streams respectively. Fish in hatcheries can reach a large size and so have a high likelihood of becoming smolts (as shown in the graph on the left). On the other hand, the growth rate is slower in natural streams so hardly any individuals reach the smolt stage. The X axis on the graphs denotes the seasons.
