Scheme of the experiment (IMAGE) Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Caption The first sample generates a double pulse from the synchrotron pulse. By moving the sample, the second pulse is delayed with respect to the first. The first pulse then excites atomic nuclei of the second sample. The strength of the excitation can be controlled by delaying the second pulse.
